How to Build a DIY Foucault Pendulum to Prove Earth’s Rotation

You might know a pendulum as the swinging weight inside a grandfather clock or a metronome keeping time for a musician. But there is one specific type that turns physics into a visible spectacle. It’s the Foucault pendulum.

Named after French physicist Leon Foucault, this device doesn’t just swing back and forth. It appears to rotate slowly in a circle over the course of a day. This visual trick proved, once and for all, that the Earth itself is spinning. The original experiments were massive. Huge. But you don’t need a grand museum or a cathedral to witness this effect.

You can build a smaller, working version at home. There is a catch, though. You need a windless day. Any breeze will throw off your data, so patience and weather forecasting are part of the build process.

Here is exactly what you need to get started.

Gather Your Materials

The list is simple. You aren’t looking for high-tech components.

  • A cloth or canvas sack : Something durable enough to hold weight without tearing.
  • Fine, dry sand : Moisture is the enemy here. Wet sand clumps. It clogs holes. It ruins the experiment.
  • A large garbage bag : This acts as your recording surface.
  • A nail : For drilling the flow hole.
  • Nylon cord : It needs to be about 13 feet (4 meters) long.
  • A tall, stable structure : A 12-to-15 foot (3.7-to-4.6 meter) ladder or a sturdy swing set.
  • Tape : Regular household tape will suffice.

Constructing the Pendulum

Start by filling the sack with sand. Don’t overfill it to the brim, but ensure it has enough mass to swing steadily. Before you attach anything, lift the sack and shake it gently. You are checking for holes. If sand leaks out early, you can’t fix it later.

Seal the top of the sack tightly with the nylon cord. Tie it off securely. Now, hang the sack from your high structure. The cord must be taut.

Once the sack is hanging, look at the bottom. Take your nail and poke a hole in the center of the sack’s base. The size matters. Make the hole slightly larger than the tip of a pen. You want a slow, steady stream of sand, not a gush. If it pours out too fast, your traces will blur. If it doesn’t flow at all, widen the hole slightly.

Check the rate. It should be consistent.

Seal the hole with tape for now. You don’t want sand leaking before you start the test.

Spread your large garbage bag on the ground directly underneath the pendulum. Cover the entire area where the pendulum will swing. This is your canvas. The sand traces will record the rotation of the Earth on this bag.

The Setup and Swing

Before you let go, check that the sack is hanging straight down. If the cord is twisted or the sack is tilted, your swing will be elliptical. You need a straight line. Adjust the cord or the sack until it hangs perfectly vertical.

Pull the sack back. Keep the cord taut. Raise it so the bottom of the sack is about 4 feet (1.2 meters)
