Your closet has a job. Clothes, shoes, accessories. That’s it.
But reality is messy. People cram everything they own into those square feet until the door barely closes. Jessica Varney, who actually does this for a living at The Tidy Up Girl, sees it all. She’s seen it. You’ve probably done it too.
Here is what needs to leave.

Clothes That Don’t Fit
You keep the shirt. The jeans. The dress. Why? Because one day—maybe soon?—you’ll fit into it again. Hope is a heavy thing to hang in a closet.
“The truth is, even if you reach that weight, you’ll celebrate with new clothes,” Varney says.
Old clothes don’t fit. New ones do. Throw the old stuff out or donate it. Free up the space. Wear what you have now.
Cash
Your closet is not a bank. Hide your money in the socks and you will forget it exists.
Forgetting is worse than theft. You lose the money, the space, and the peace of mind. Put cash in a safe or a dresser. Somewhere boring. Somewhere secure.
Paper Traps
Receipts. Old checks. Statements from three years ago. You keep them because you think a lawyer will demand them someday. A dramatic scene. A gavel.
“The odds are low that you’ll need them,” Varney says.
They just clutter your mind when you find them. Recycle the panic. Recycle the paper. Move on.
Hidden Garbage
In a hurry? Stuff the trash bag in the corner of the closet. Just for an hour. Just until the cleaners leave.
An hour turns into a week. The smell starts. The mold sets in. You walk in months later, remember the “temporary” box, and regret everything.
Throw it in the bin. When you mean it, do it. Not later.
Bedding and Towels
Unless you are living in a closet-sized studio apartment with zero other options, your sheets do not belong here.
Move the linens to a linen closet or under the bed. Keep the main closet for your daily armor. What you wear out. What you see. What matters in the morning rush.
Food
Never. Put. Food. In. The. Closet.
Humans and pets both crave snacks. A bag of chips hidden behind sweaters? A rat’s paradise. Bugs move in. They eat. They multiply. Your wool coats become a buffet.
Keep the pantry separate. Keep the clothes safe.
Why do we keep storing life’s detritus in the place where we prepare for the day?
